The qualified and experienced practitioners in our acupuncture clinic provide acupuncture as a part of your overall osteopathy treatment. They are all qualified osteopaths who have studied acupuncture as well. Osteopaths have extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology and are well placed to use acupuncture in their approach to pain control. In addition, their use of manual techniques and rehabilitation combine well with the use of acupuncture to give an overall effective package of care.

The needling technique is sterile and largely painless – the needles used are far finer than those used for inoculations. The points chosen are either trigger points within muscles (painful, tight bands within the muscle) or recognised points associated with a pattern of pain. A local pain-relieving response is often felt once the needles are in place.

Pimlico Osteopathy has several osteopaths who have undergone further vigorous training in acupuncture and integrate evidence-based acupuncture into their treatments for the benefit of their patients. They can be specifically requested when booking an initial consultation.

Our acupuncture specialist Jing Ye graduated as an acupuncturist from the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1992, and moved to the UK in 2002 to practice Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture. She also completed a Masters degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Middlesex University in 2011.

Why have acupuncture with an osteopath?

In the UK there are two main professional groups that practise acupuncture. One group has studied acupuncture as part of three years of Chinese Traditional Medicine studies; the other will have completed three years or more of Western medical studies (to become a doctor or an osteopath for example) and studied acupuncture as a post-graduate activity, focussed on applying it in their main area of expertise.

Osteopaths are one of the largest groups of medical professionals in the UK practising acupuncture and the vast majority of acupuncture treatments in the UK are for musculoskeletal conditions requiring osteopathy. They are fully aware of the physiology (functioning) of the body through their osteopathy study and practical work. Their additional acupuncture learning consists of 300 hours of theoretical and practical studies and assessments, mainly in the musculoskeletal area and structured around evidence-based western acupuncture research.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is a very safe procedure when carried out by fully qualified professionals. Our osteopaths are qualified to deliver this therapy in our acupuncture clinic and follow strict hygiene guidelines. Acupuncture needles are the same width as human hair, much smaller than a normal injection needle, so having acupuncture does not feel the same as having an injection. The needles are disposable, pre-sterilised and individually packaged. These are often supplied in guide-tubes for easy insertion which means that there is no risk of anything touching the needle during the process. When needles are inserted, you may feel a temporary, sharp pricking sensation but it soon passes and side-effects from acupuncture are rare.
